Self-awareness, simplified and streamlined systems, and a well-rounded team are the three critical ingredients in her signature approach, “The Sustainable Business Growth Catalyst”, to developing a sustainable business foundation. “These three elements work together to fuel growth, support sustainability, and introduce balance. I believe that great leaders stay true to who they are and lead by their strengths, instead of leading by imitation,” Chan includes. This renowned businesswoman believes that the secret to developing strong teams is to cast on individual strengths, which allows everyone to thrive at a variety of tasks.

Not Your Ordinary Leadership Expert

You don’t need a billion-dollar idea to get started. For execution, you just need a small, simple concept and a lot of passion. You need to take tiny steps! This is what the founder of Sette believes in. She is the type of person that will urge you to dream big and motivate you to work smarter.

When Vivian was young, she was always the last to voice her point of view and would only say something if it was really necessary. Not only that, she would take the information in and filter it out and see what everybody in the room had missed. She shares, “I remember knowing the strengths that I had, but always being overlooked. Those who were chosen to lead in elementary & high school were those who are outspoken and loud, who always had their hands up first. And I would sit and question “Why am I not being chosen to lead?” But I’ve always known deep down that I was born to lead. I was meant to be a leader!”

One skill that reflects in Chan’s professional and personal life both, is leadership. One of her most important missions in life is to help everyone see leadership in a new light. And to understand that there are many different types of leaders. According to Vivian Chan, true leaders are those who maintain space, walk beside people, and listen in order to lead quietly, not only those who are at the front of the room and vociferous. She created this quiet leadership on her own and was finally given the chance to fully embrace it.

There is no denying that we’re all given moments and opportunities that forge our path forward in life. And when this self-made businesswoman had experiences where she didn’t feel valued under poor management and leadership, she realized that she did not belong to that kind of workplace. Because, if you’re going to burn yourself out, what’s the point? This realization led to a slew of positive changes and opportunities in Vivian’s life. She became energized about pursuing her love of assisting people in becoming better leaders. “I was determined to work for myself so that I get to decide how to run a company and do things the right way. I can truly see people! Giving opportunities to those who may be being overlooked, yet have brilliant strengths and skills. If only they were given the opportunity to lead,” she says. And cut to today, Vivian is proud to go into small firms and help to focus on the skill set that each individual brings to the table, allowing them to have a position where they come to work and are excited to do what they do every single day. She acknowledges where the obstacles or gaps in a team are and helps fill them with the precise right individual based on their skills through her ability to observe. Chan adds, “I’m able to put into place the systems to be able to help the team to work cohesively together. And I am able to help them to be able to grow a team-based business, where each individual can excel, is recognized and seen for their strengths, and is able to fully grow with their company. That is the opportunity I sought for.”

Vivian Chan looks forward to teaching leadership and management in businesses so that they may focus on establishing a team that will grow alongside them! Every person, she believes, has the potential to be a leader!

Opportunities Emerged from Obstacles

Keeping her focus on the desired outcomes and focusing on how far she’s come, Vivian stays motivated and keeps moving forward even when things get rough. When the Covid-19 pandemic struck in 2020, it impacted over a million enterprises. Sharing her experience with the substantial hardships, Vivian says, “Learning doesn’t stop! When things were quiet in business, I focused on what I could do and within control by making time to study and learn different skillsets, and improving my offers so that I can serve my clients better.”

As an intentional entrepreneur, Chan discovered a means to network with people. Despite having no purpose for the call, she began engaging in one-on-one discussions with her audience. She mentions, “I started opening a few slots on the calendar each month and let people in my email list book a virtual coffee chat with me. We basically just show up and chat about random things in life and business. I’m so glad that I did it because I was able to know who some of them are people who signed up to read my emails and what they’re up to. And I hope I can keep up with these virtual chats with my audience.”

Vivian, a phenomenal talent-nurturer, didn’t consider quitting despite facing numerous obstacles along the way. She felt that no one should have to figure it out on their own, which is why she was so determined to provide everyone with virtual support as they embarked on this difficult road.

First and Foremost, the Team

Vivian Chan is of the opinion that leadership is not so much about directing and telling. It is about allowing and listening! This well-acclaimed personality knows the value of bringing in team members and letting them grow with the organization rather than dealing with the turnover of new team members over and over again. She asserts, My greatest strength is my ability to listen and see people for who they are and find a role that fits them, rather than fitting them into your role. I’m usually the last person to speak in a meeting. I would listen carefully to what everyone has to say, really listen to what their needs, fears, and concerns are, even the unspoken ones.”

Sette is business education, mentorship, and coaching hub for those who refuse to accept the ordinary and have excellent, fresh ideas. Following her experiences with micromanagement, Vivian ensures that her team members are given the proper roles and responsibilities so that they can lead. She has cultivated a culture in which the team is committed to the individual’s progress as well as the company’s growth. As a result, she has been able to create a company that not only has employees but also has full-fledged leadership in every role.

Sage Advice

When asked for her best piece of advice for the future generation of ambitious and budding business people, Vivian said, “Start working on your mindset, today! Success is 80% mindset and 20% strategy. You can have a great strategy, but it won’t work unless you have the right mindset.”

With over 10 years of management and operations expertise, the founder of Sette believes her greatest achievement is to have people congratulate her and say she was the best manager and leader they’d ever worked for! Vivian Chan, unlike many others, places a greater emphasis on connecting with her audience and maintaining that bond.
