The Influential 100
Some leaders measure success by growth, recognition, or milestones. Others define it by the number of lives they inspire to create meaningful change. Dr. Ash Pachauri belongs to the latter. As the Co-Founder and Director of the POP (Protect Our Planet) Movement, he has dedicated his career to helping young people become informed, confident, and compassionate leaders capable of addressing some of the world’s greatest challenges.
Founded in 2016, the POP Movement was inspired by the visionary ideas of Dr. R.K. Pachauri, whose lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship laid the foundation for the movement’s mission. Building on that vision, the POP Movement has grown into a global platform that brings together education, mentorship, technology, and community action.
What truly distinguishes his leadership is not simply the scale of his work, but the values that guide it. Purpose, empathy, collaboration, and perseverance have shaped every step of his journey. Rather than creating followers, he believes in empowering others to become leaders in their own communities. In this exclusive Influential 100 Interview, Dr. Pachauri reflects on his professional journey, the lessons that have shaped his leadership, and his vision for a future where knowledge inspires action and every individual understands their power to make a difference.
Q: Your career has been dedicated to creating positive change. What first inspired you to take this path?
Dr. Ash Pachauri: My journey has always been driven by the belief that knowledge should inspire action. Growing up, I was surrounded by conversations about climate, public health, and sustainable development, which helped me understand the complexity of global challenges. The turning point came when I realized that while awareness of climate change was increasing, public participation was not keeping pace. That realization, together with the inspiring vision of my father, led to the creation of the POP Movement in 2016. His lifelong dedication to protecting the planet continues to guide our work today. Since then, working alongside young leaders, educators, scientists, and partners around the world has reinforced my belief that true leadership is about creating more leaders, not more followers.
Q: Is there a personal philosophy that has consistently guided your decisions throughout your career?
Dr. Ash Pachauri: I have always believed that knowledge must lead to action, and action must create hope. Leadership begins with service, and lasting change comes through collaboration rather than competition. I also believe that people create sustainable change when they feel empowered instead of being told what to do. Every initiative we develop is designed to help individuals move from awareness to ownership because that is where real transformation begins.
Q: Looking back, which achievements have been the most meaningful to you?
Dr. Ash Pachauri: Reaching ten years of the POP Movement has been one of the most meaningful milestones in my journey. During this time, we have built a global community of young leaders, mentors, educators, and institutional partners who share the same commitment to protecting our planet. I am also proud of initiatives like POPPix, the POP Academy, PLANET-HEAL, and the development of the POP Museum for Climate Action. While recognition and awards are always appreciated, the greatest achievement has been seeing young people discover their own leadership potential and take meaningful action in their communities.
Q: Which personal qualities have helped you become the leader you are today?
Dr. Ash Pachauri: Purpose has always been my starting point. Every decision I make begins with asking whether it benefits both people and the planet. Empathy has also been essential because understanding different perspectives builds trust and meaningful partnerships. Finally, perseverance has played a significant role. Building a global movement takes patience, resilience, and the willingness to continue moving forward even when progress happens gradually.
Q: The POP Movement continues to expand its impact. What makes its approach unique?
Dr. Ash Pachauri: I see the POP Movement as much more than an organization. It is an ecosystem that helps develop future leaders. Through the POP Academy, we provide climate and leadership education. POPPix serves as an AI-powered mentor that supports climate literacy and wellbeing. Our global mentor network encourages youth leadership, while our festivals, educational resources, publications, and upcoming POP Museum create opportunities for continuous learning and engagement. Together, these initiatives combine education, mentorship, technology, and community action in ways that encourage people to become active participants rather than passive observers.
Q: What projects are you currently most excited about, and why?
Dr. Ash Pachauri: Several initiatives are especially exciting because of the long-term impact they can create. The POP Museum will offer an immersive experience that encourages visitors to become part of the solution instead of simply learning about global challenges. We are also expanding POPPix so it can provide more personalized support for climate education and resilience. Through PLANET-HEAL, we are building a global platform that connects environmental sustainability with health, leadership, research, and international collaboration. In addition, we are preparing a global walking initiative that promotes health, peace, climate awareness, and community participation through one of the simplest activities that everyone can embrace.
Q: Every leader faces obstacles. What has been your greatest challenge, and what did it teach you?
Dr. Ash Pachauri: One of our biggest challenges has been turning awareness into long-term action. Many people understand the issues facing our planet, but maintaining engagement over time is much more difficult. We addressed this by focusing on building communities rather than running isolated campaigns. Through leadership pathways, accessible learning tools like POPPix, and continuous participation opportunities, we discovered that meaningful change grows through relationships. That lesson continues to shape everything we do.
Q: As you look toward the future, what vision continues to inspire you?
Dr. Ash Pachauri: Over the next five years, we want the POP Movement to become one of the world’s leading platforms for youth leadership and climate action. We plan to expand our global mentor network, establish regional leadership hubs, launch the POP Museum, strengthen the POP Academy, scale POPPix internationally, and grow PLANET-HEAL into a recognized platform for environmental transformation and health research. Ultimately, our vision is to help build a generation that leads with knowledge, compassion, innovation, and purpose.
Q: Finally, what advice would you share with future leaders who hope to make a lasting difference?
Dr. Ash Pachauri: Build something that matters beyond yourself. Don’t focus on recognition. Focus on solving meaningful problems. Invest in people, develop future leaders, and stay committed to your values, especially during difficult times. Success should never be measured only by personal achievements but by how many people become capable of creating positive change because of your leadership. The greatest legacy any leader can leave is not an organization, but a generation that continues the work long into the future.
Dr. Ash Pachauri’s influence extends well beyond the initiatives he has launched or the global partnerships he has built. His leadership is rooted in a simple but powerful belief that lasting change begins by empowering people to lead with knowledge, compassion, and purpose. Through the POP Movement, he has created opportunities for young people across the world to become active contributors to a healthier and more sustainable future.
His journey demonstrates that meaningful leadership is measured not only by personal accomplishments but by the positive impact created in others. As the POP Movement continues to grow through education, mentorship, and global collaboration, Dr. Pachauri remains committed to building communities where leadership is shared, hope is strengthened, and future generations are equipped to protect both people and the planet. His work serves as a lasting reminder that the most influential leaders are those who inspire others to believe that their actions truly matter.
